Just a short and scenic drive from Austin lies a town where creativity blossoms across parks, sidewalks, storefronts, and local landmarks—Wimberley, Texas, a community deeply committed to celebrating art, culture, and all things whimsically Texan. One of its most charming testaments to this spirit is the Bootiful Wimberley project, a public art initiative of the Wimberley Arts and Cultural Alliance.

The vision took shape on September 13, 2014, with the inaugural Baring Our Boots party—a gathering that kicked off a dream rooted in artistic expression, hometown pride, and cultural heritage. What started as a creative spark has blossomed into a full-fledged community treasure. Today, 50 uniquely crafted boots, each bursting with character, are showcased throughout Wimberley, turning the town into a dynamic open-air gallery.

One standout is the sculpture titled “Hill Country Soul”, unveiled on October 3, 2022, by Michael Hall, a Driftwood-based sculptor of international acclaim. With the help of artist Paul Malachi, Hall brought to life a piece that beautifully reflects the heart of the Texas Hill Country.

We found 11 of these expressive boots on a recent visit, each one telling its own story—from cowboy flair to nature-inspired motifs. While a few boots are located within walking distance of the town square, many require a short drive around town—which makes for an even more scenic and exploratory adventure. Don’t forget to pick up a handy guide at the Wimberley Chamber of Commerce to chart your own boot tour.

Whether you're an art aficionado, a curious traveler, or simply in search of a lovely escape from city life, Wimberley invites you to wander, wonder, and soak in its rich cultural fabric. The boots are more than just sculptures—they're symbols of community creativity, local support, and the soul of the Hill Country.

My husband and I recently decided to explore this nearby gem, not quite sure what we’d find. To our delight, we discovered we could stroll through an art gallery without ever stepping inside a building. Colorful, larger-than-life boot sculptures welcomed us at every turn, blending into the town’s natural charm.

You could make a great Bingo game or Scavenger Hunt for your family, making the hunt for these boots even more exciting. How many can you find?
